NYC Speeders Could Be Forced To Limit How Fast They Drive

Drivers would need to install speed-limiting devices. New York City could force drivers who repeatedly rack up speeding tickets to install technology that limits their cars' speed. The City plans to expand its municipal fleet from 1,000 vehicles to 3,000 over the next three years. The proposed state law would allow drivers to travel up to 5 miles per hour above the posted limit, with limited flexibility for traffic conditions. The technology would target drivers who consistently violate speed limits. Vehicle owners found liable for at least 16 speed camera violations within a year could be ordered to install a device following a hearing. The state law also provides a separate pathway for drivers who accumulate at least 11 points on their driving records from specified speeding violations within 18 months. The device must remain installed until the state commissioner approves its removal.
