Staten Island Chuck Says Fuhgeddabout Winter

New York City's prognosticating groundhog is in agreement with Punxsutawney Phil that spring is coming. New York City's Staten Island Chuck, a groundhog named after Punxsutawney Phil, didn't see his shadow on Friday morning, indicating an early spring, according to folklore. This prediction came on the 10th anniversary of the day former Mayor Bill de Blasio infamously dropped Staten Island Ch. The groundhog's prediction was in agreement with his cousin, PunxsUTawney Chuck, who also did not see a shadow at Gobbler's Knob in Pennsylvania. The news came as part of a larger effort to prevent the death of the groundhog, which led to the rodent's death days later.

New York City's prognosticating groundhog didn't see his shadow Friday morning — meaning an early spring is on its way, at least according to lore.

Chuck was in agreement with his popular cousin Punxsutawney Phil, who also didn't see his shadow at Gobbler's Knob in Pennsylvania. The prediction from Staten Island Chuck also came on the 10-year anniversary of the day that former Mayor Bill de Blasio infamously dropped the rodent, causing his (actually her) unceremonious death days later.

Reporter Kadia Goba tweeted she texted de Blasio about the inauspicious occasion and got this response: "Any event at 7 in the morning featuring an agitated live animal doesn't end well..." The Associated Press contributed to this report.
