NEW YORK CITY — A man who instigated a harrowing, caught-on-video confrontation on an A train in Brooklyn remained in critical condition the morning after police said he was shot in the head with his own gun.

Video from the Thursday rush-hour clash — in which a man, 36, belligerently taunts and fights another straphanger, 32, before pulling the gun that was ultimately turned against him — gripped New York City and beyond as authorities pieced together the violent sequence of events. No charges had been filed as of Friday morning, whether against the critically wounded 36-year-old belligerent or the 32-year-old man taken into custody, an NYPD spokesperson told Patch.

Janno Lieber, the MTA's chair and CEO, said Friday the incident showed the need for gun control. "I'm not prejudging who is responsible, but the fact that the guy had a gun and he went into his pocket and that is what ended with the shooting," he told NYPD

"You think you can beat up cops," the 36-year-old said, an apparent reference to a Times Square incident. "F--- you, f--- your kind." The 32-year-old man stands up, and a fight breaks out between the two, the video shows. As the fight escalates, the belligerent man accuses the other man, or the woman the straphanger is shielding, of stabbing him. He then pulls a gun, sparking a mad scramble by other straphangers for the exits. "Let me out," the person taking the video screams, right before gunshots are heard and passengers scramble off the train. New Yorkers are begging the politicians to step up and do the right thing. This video is all over the internet and my anxiety is bad from looking at this. Crack down on those who break the laws. This is horrible. Putting people’s lives at risk. The subways are not safe!
