NEW YORK CITY — An 11th-hour deal between Mount Sinai and UnitedHealthcare restored insurance coverage for thousands of New Yorkers, and averted more from seeing their doctors go out-of-network.

The deal announced late Tuesday appeared to end a cost dispute between Mount Sinai and the insurer that left patients unsure whether they had coverage at one of New York City's biggest and most prestigious hospital systems. Mount Sinai's hospitals and outpatient facilities were booted off UnitedHealthcare and Oxford Health Plans networks as March dawned, and representatives for both sides warned the system's physicians would follow March 22, Friday, if a deal couldn't be reached.

But the suspense for Mount Sinai patients ended Tuesday with the deal. "This is a win for our patients and for our providers, who have worked tirelessly to provide outstanding care during this uncertain time," said Brendan Carr, Mount Sinai Health System CEO, in a statement.

"UnitedHealthcare and Mount Sinai Health System have agreed to a new multi-year contract that restores network access to the health system’s hospitals for people enrolled in employer-sponsored and individual plans, including the Oxford Health Plan, effective immediately," a statement from UnitedHealthcare reads. "The agreement also ensures continued, uninterrupted access to Mount Sinai’s physicians."
