HARLEM, NY — A pair of cops patrolling a Harlem subway station were attacked by a subway scofflaw who sprayed them with mace early Wednesday, officials said.

The two NYPD officers spotted man inside the East 116/Lexington Ave 6 train station skip out on paying the subway fare by entering through the emergency exit about 3 a.m., police said. When the officers walked up to the man, he pulled out a can of mace and unleashed the irritant chemicals on the two cops, officials told Patch.

The man was quickly arrested, police said, with charges still pending as of later Wednesday morning. Medics brought the two officers to a nearby hospital for evaluation, police said.
