Man Charged For Hitting Police Officer With Car At Mall In Bergen County

A New York City man has been captured after hitting a police officer with his car at a mall in Paramus, and for other crimes, police say. Manuel Jimenez, a New York City man, has been charged with aggravated assault and other charges for allegedly striking a police officer with his car at the Garden State Plaza Mall in Paramus, New Jersey. The incident occurred on Jan. 29 during a police investigation into motor vehicle burglaries and the use of stolen credit cards. Following work by a task force including the FBI-NY Westchester Safe Streets Task Force, DEA, Westchester District Attorney’s Office, NYPD, Yonkers PD, and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department, Jimenez was identified as the driver of the fleeing motor vehicle and the suspect responsible for fraudulent purchases with the stolen credit card. He is currently being held at the New York Yonkers intake unit awaiting extradition to face charges.

PARAMUS, NJ — A New York City man has been charged with aggravated assault and other charges after striking a police officer with his car at the Garden State Plaza Mall in Paramus, Paramus police said Tuesday.

Manuel Jimenez, 23, was taken into custody on Monday following work by a task force including the FBI-NY Westchester Safe Streets Task Force, DEA, Westchester District Attorney’s Office, NYPD, Yonkers PD, and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department, police said. Paramus Police Chief Robert Guidetti said that on Jan. 29, Police Officer Michael Cleary was struck by Jimenez's fleeing vehicle at the Westfield-Garden State Plaza mall, off of Route 17, while conducting a police investigation involving motor vehicle burglaries and the use of stolen credit cards.

"Through meticulous investigative work, Detective Holden identified the driver of the fleeing motor vehicle and the suspect responsible for making fraudulent purchases with the stolen credit cards as Manuel Jimenez," Guidetti said Tuesday.

Jimenez has been charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated assault while eluding in a vehicle, fraudulent use of credit cards, identity theft, impersonation: trafficking. Jimenez is currently being held at the New York Yonkers intake unit awaiting extradition to face charges, police said.

The Paramus Police Department thanked the other agencies "involved in the collaborative effort to apprehend Jimenez and bring him to justice."
