NYC Restaurants: New (Old) Trader Joe's + Mike Tyson Lends An Ear

The saga of a New York City's only Trader Joe's wine shop became more of a buzzkill, according to a report. A new Trader Joe's Pronto restaurant has opened in its former Union Square location, despite a federal union complaint claiming it is a "giant slap in the face" to former wine shop workers who claim the company closed the store to thwart a union drive. The union claims that Trader Joe is doing everything to prevent a profitable unionized shop from reopening. Three restaurants across the city were ordered closed by city health inspectors after they ran afoul of health inspectors.

A grab-pay-and-go shop called Trader Joe's Pronto opened in the dear, departed wine store's place this week, as first reported by EV Grieve. The opening puts a damper on the wine shop's potential resurrection — at least in its old Union Square location — if a federal union complaint is successful.

Representatives with the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union told the outlet is a "giant slap in the face" to former wine shop workers, who contend the company closed the store to bust a union drive. "We believe Trader Joe's is doing everything in its power to prevent a profitable unionized shop from reopening," union representatives said in a statement to EV Grieve. "We refuse to let Trader Joe's continue to get away with their egregious and illegal union-busting tactics."

Patch's small local newsroom also kept tabs on restaurant openings this past week. Eater NY's estimable roundup of most anticipated spring openings showed many mouth-watering possibilities. Besides that, we learned an Upper East Side Greek eatery will be setting up shop across the park. Yasouvláki is looking to take over the former home of Slovenian-American restaurant, Pekarna, on the Upper West Side.

Finally, three restaurants across the city ran afoul of city health inspectors and were ordered closed.
