How NY Breast Cancer Death Rates Compare To Rest Of U.S.

Seen "SEND NUDES" posters in Williamsburg or the Lower East Side? The NYC campaign urges women to take topless selfies. A campaign in New York City has encouraged women to monitor changes in their breasts, particularly those who have not yet reached the recommended age for routine mammograms. The campaign includes posters displaying "SEND NUDES" alongside QR codes at locations across the city. The CEO of YARD NYC, Ruth Bernstein, developed the campaign based on research showing that 62.6 percent of women surveyed lacked confidence in their ability to notice changes in breasts. In New York, 2,280 women died of breast cancer in 2024, compared with 2,204 in 2022 and 2,292 in 2021. The age-adjusted mortality rate declined from 19.4 in 2021 to 18.7 in 2024. Breast cancer death rates were generally higher across the Southeast and Appalachia in 2024 and Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia all exceeded the national average. Despite advances in screening and treatment, breast cancer incidence has increased by about 1 percent annually between 2012 and 2021.
