NEW YORK CITY — An NYPD officer is facing charges after shooting another man during an apparent road-rage incident in New Jersey, authorities announced Thursday.
Hieu Tran, 27, was arrested Thursday by the NYPD and has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Tran shot the victim with his department-issued gun after a May 17 crash in Voorhees, NJ, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.
Voorhees police officers responding to the vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 73 and Cooper Road found one of the drivers had suffered a gunshot wound, the CCPO said. The victim was taken to Cooper University Hospital, where he remains in treatment, authorities told Patch.
The NYPD has suspended Tran without pay, a department spokesperson told Patch. He has been an NYPD officer since early 2021. Last year, he earned a base salary of $53,600 and received nearly $11,000 in paid overtime, according to public records.
Tran — a Yonkers, New York, resident — was identified as the shooter through surveillance footage, cell phone records and ballistics, authorities said.
He is being held in New York, with extradition to New Jersey pending.
