For-Profit Donation Center Comes to Newport Plaza Downtown

Earlier this month a new option for donating clothing and household objects came to Jersey City. GreenDrop, a for-profit company, recently opened its first donation center in Jersey City, accepting donations of household objects and clothing on behalf of their local nonprofit partners. The items are then sold to thrift stores, with proceeds benefiting local programming of their partnered nonprofits. The company currently has over 50 drop off locations in eight states and the District of Columbia, including five other spots in New Jersey. The donation center is located in Newport Plaza at 125 Eighteenth St. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is tax-deductible.

Earlier this month a new option for donating clothing and household objects came to Jersey City.

GreenDrop®, a for-profit company, is now accepting donations of household objects and clothing on behalf of their local nonprofit partners, in this case the American Red Cross, at its first Jersey City at Newport Plaza Downtown.

Community members may bring their items for donation to a drive-up location during hours of operation. Attendants will help with the donation process. The items are then sold to thrift stores, with proceeds benefiting local programming of their partnered nonprofits. Donations are tax-deductible.

Jason Krieger, Director of GreenDrop® operations, remarked, “We are thrilled to bring our sustainable services to Newport Plaza and provide an easy, earth-friendly way for Hudson County residents to support the American Red Cross… We look forward to being an integral part of the Jersey City community.”

The company currently has over 50 drop off locations in eight states and the District of Columbia, including five other spots in New Jersey. They accept items like books, kitchen tools and gently-worn clothing. They note on their website, “Whether you’ve just cleaned out your closets or your entire home, our GreenDrop® donation center is an easy, convenient, and eco-friendly way to donate to our nonprofit partner…. If you need another reason to visit the donation center in Jersey City, you’re helping to keep reusable stuff out of landfills. It’s a win-win.”

Attendees at the ribbon-cutting ceremony included Andrew Fenwick, Jersey City Environmental Commission Secretary; Annette Chapparro, Hudson County District 33 Assemblywoman; Sara Huisking, Red Cross Executive Director, North Jersey Region; Yousef Saleh, Councilman of Ward D; Jonathan Gomez, Aide to Jersey City Mayor Fulop.

Jersey City’s GreenDrop® donation center is located in Newport Plaza at 125 Eighteenth St. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
