More than 79 e-bike and scooter-related robberies have been tracked by the NYPD in 2024. The New York City Police Department has announced a crackdown on illegal motorized scooters and e-scooters in an effort to reduce crime in the city. The move includes the redeployment of Community Response Team officers to remove illegal vehicles and use strategic checkpoints at bridges, tunnels, and other major roadways across the five boroughs. The NYPD has removed more than 13,000 illegal two-wheeled vehicles and ATVs in 2024, with over 79 e-bike and scooter-related robberies tracked by the NYPD in 2024. The announcement comes after Bernardo Raul Castro-Mata, 19, shot two police officers in East Elmhurst earlier this week and attempted to flee on a scooter while fleeing from the scene. NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban called these motorbikes dangerous and reckless.

One of those strategies includes the redeployment of Community Response Team officers to focus on removing illegal vehicles. NYPD officers will also use strategic checkpoints at bridges, tunnels, and other major roadways and crossings across the five boroughs. NYPD officials have said these illegal vehicles have been linked to numerous robberies, shootings and other crimes.

More than 79 e-bike and scooter-related robberies have been tracked by the NYPD in 2024.

Last year, the NYPD confiscated 18,430 illegal and unregistered motorized scooters, bikes, and ATVs — the highest number in city history.

So far in 2024, the NYPD has already removed more than 13,000 illegal two-wheeled vehicles and ATVs. This announcement comes after Bernardo Raul Castro-Mata, 19 shot two police officers in East Elmhurst earlier this week and tried fleeing on a scooter. The officers were investigating a robbery pattern in the area involving these illegal vehicles.

“Mopeds and scooters are not only endangering pedestrians when they are driven recklessly, but we have also seen an exponential increase in criminals using them to ride around and snatch property from New Yorkers. That’s why the NYPD will be ramping up a summer enforcement strategy to curb use of these illegal and unregistered vehicles," Adams said.

NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban said these vehicles have no place in New York City:

“These motorbikes are dangerous and reckless, and they put everyone on our streets and sidewalks at risk. On top of that, these bikes have become the vehicle of choice in the commission of robberies and other violent crime patterns across our city."
